You’ve probably been reading about this for weeks. You’ve seen clinics promising numbers they can’t back up, forums full of people who felt sold to, and at least one article telling you the whole category is a scam. That’s a reasonable place to be stuck.
This page is written to get you unstuck. It covers what Mexico actually permits, what cells GIOSTAR Mexico uses and where they come from, who we treat, who we turn away, and a checklist you can use on any clinic in the country, including this one. GIOSTAR Mexico has treated patients since 2016, in COFEPRIS-certified clinics, under protocols established by Dr. Anand Srivastava.
Why Patients Travel to Mexico for Stem Cell Therapy
Most of our patients aren’t looking for a holiday with an IV attached. They’re here because the treatment their physician described isn’t available where they live, or because the version available at home is a narrower one.[4] They’re looking for options that fit their condition and their own health goals: options they can’t currently get in their own country.

But cost isn’t the main reason patients come. And it isn’t only patients with one type of condition who come. Access is the reason. Patients seeking care for autoimmune conditions, joint and musculoskeletal problems, chronic pain, and other complex or treatment-resistant conditions may come to Mexico when the options available at home have not provided the results they are looking for. For many, it is about finding access to specialized treatments and alternative care options that may not be readily available in their home country.
What Mexico allows that the US and Canada don’t
Intrathecal, cervical and lumbar application of stem cells is not permitted in the United States or Canada. It is legal, and regulated, in Mexico: administered under COFEPRIS oversight, in certified clinics and laboratories, by providers who have built years of clinical experience under defined safety and quality standards.
That matters because route of delivery is not a detail. An IV infusion circulates cells systemically; an intrathecal application places them into the cerebrospinal fluid, which is a different proposition entirely for conditions affecting the spinal cord and brain. A US clinic can offer you an excellent autologous joint injection. It cannot legally offer you the intrathecal route, no matter how good it is.
This is the one thing a US competitor structurally cannot match. It’s also the honest reason a patient with MS, ALS or a spinal cord injury ends up on a plane.
COFEPRIS, and how Mexico regulates stem cell clinics
COFEPRIS is Mexico’s federal health regulator, the counterpart to the FDA. Clinics that administer cellular therapies need federal authorization to do it, and the laboratory that prepares the cells needs its own separate authorization. The two are not the same license.
GIOSTAR Mexico operates under COFEPRIS certification and follows GMP practices. Each batch is tested to verify cell count, viability and sterility before it is approved for treatment.
Ask any clinic you’re considering to show you theirs. A licensed clinic will have the document and will send it. That single request filters out a surprising number of them.
🧬 How GIOSTAR Mexico Treats: Cells, Sourcing and Delivery
Allogeneic cells, sourcing and preparation
GIOSTAR Mexico protocols use allogeneic adult mesenchymal stem cells, derived from adipose tissue or umbilical cord, depending on the protocol.[1]
Many patients don’t realize that the quality of a stem cell treatment depends not only on the cells themselves, but also on how they are stored, handled, and prepared before administration. At GIOSTAR, our on-site COFEPRIS-authorized laboratory allows our team to maintain strict quality-control standards, oversee proper preservation and handling of cell vials, and follow established protocols designed to support cell integrity, safety, and consistency throughout the treatment process.
Cells are sourced from adipose or umbilical cord tissue. Adipose-derived cells come from healthy donors between 18 and 22 years of age, screened through cytotoxicity and oncogenicity testing before use.
IV, intrathecal and localized application
Three routes, chosen by condition rather than by preference.
Intravenous (IV) infusion distributes cells systemically (the route for metabolic, autoimmune and whole-body applications). Intrathecal (IT) application delivers cells into the cerebrospinal fluid through the subarachnoid space, used for neurological conditions where reaching the central nervous system is the point. Local application places cells directly into the affected joint or tissue (the route for a knee, a shoulder, a specific injury).
Many protocols combine them. A neurological protocol commonly pairs IV with intrathecal; a joint protocol may be local only.
The number of vials and the cell count in your protocol are set by your Medical Director, based on your condition and your evaluation, not from a menu.
What GIOSTAR does not use, and one distinction worth making
Every GIOSTAR Mexico protocol uses adult mesenchymal stem cells: never embryonic or pluripotent cells, under any circumstances.
One point of confusion is worth clearing up here, because it comes up often. Umbilical cord-derived cells are not embryonic cells. They are adult mesenchymal stem cells, collected from donated umbilical cord tissue following healthy births, tissue that would otherwise be discarded. No embryo is involved at any point. Cord tissue is one of the most widely used and well-characterized sources of mesenchymal cells in regenerative medicine, and the same donor screening applies to it.[2]
This is worth asking every clinic you speak to, because a lot of marketing copy in this category is deliberately vague about cell type. A clinic should be able to answer it in one sentence.
Conditions Treated at GIOSTAR Mexico
Four broad groups. Each has its own detailed page. This is the map, not the territory.
Musculoskeletal and sports injuries. Arthritis, joint and cartilage degeneration, ligament and tendon injuries, back and hip pain, spinal stenosis. These protocols are usually local application, sometimes combined with IV. See conditions we treat for the full list.
Neurological. MS, ALS, Parkinson’s, spinal cord injury, stroke recovery, neuropathy, ataxia, autism. Protocols here typically use the intrathecal route alongside IV, which is the access point Mexico permits and the US does not. Details on each are in our neurological condition pages.
Autoimmune and inflammatory. Crohn’s, lupus, scleroderma, ankylosing spondylitis, muscular dystrophy and related conditions. Donor cells are usually recommended for this group, for the reason described above. Start at the autoimmune conditions we work with.

If your condition isn’t on this list, that isn’t automatically a no, but it isn’t automatically a yes either. That’s what the evaluation is for.
Where GIOSTAR Treats
Los Algodones. On the Baja California border, minutes from the US crossing. Patients flying in are collected at the border or at Yuma Airport and taken to the clinic or their hotel. Whichever clinic you’re treated at, the Medical Director reviews your plan in person when you arrive. Nothing is finalized before someone has looked at you.
🔍 How to Choose a Stem Cell Clinic in Mexico
Use this on us. If a clinic can’t or won’t answer these before you pay, that answer is the answer.
- Ask for the COFEPRIS license, specifically. Not “are you certified.” Ask which license, covering what scope, and whether the laboratory preparing your cells holds its own separate authorization. Ask them to send the document.
- Ask where the cells come from. Donor or your own? If donor: what tissue, what donor age range, what screening. “Ethically sourced” is marketing. Cytotoxicity and oncogenicity screening is an answer.
- Ask what you’re actually receiving, in writing. How many cells, how viability is measured, and when. Ask for it before you travel, not on the treatment day. Be careful with viability percentages quoted in advertising.
- Ask who treats you. The name of the physician, their credentials, whether you’ll actually meet them, and who designed the protocol. If nobody is named on the website, that’s information too.
- Ask what they won’t treat. This is the most useful question on the list. A clinic that accepts every condition and every patient is not screening. A clinic that turns people away is.
- Ask what’s included, and what isn’t. Evaluation, labs and imaging, protocol design, cell processing and QA, the sessions themselves, monitoring, aftercare, transfers, language support. Get the list before you book a flight.
- Ask what happens after you go home. Follow-up is where the difference between a clinic and a transaction shows up.
- Notice how they answer. Evasive, rushed or high-pressure responses tell you more about a clinic than its website does. So does a clinic that’s willing to say “we don’t know yet.”
Is Stem Cell Therapy in Mexico Safe? Risks, Candidacy and Who We Turn Away
Here’s the honest version.
Stem cell therapy is a medical procedure and carries the risks any injection procedure carries: infection or bleeding at the injection site, bruising, transient fever or flu-like response as the immune system reacts, headache or nausea following intrathecal application, and, rarely, allergic reaction. Most of these are short-term. Our medical screening process is there to determine whether the therapy is an appropriate and safe fit for each patient, and whether GIOSTAR Mexico is the right provider for their needs. Screening reduces those risks. It doesn’t remove them.
Beyond procedural risk, there’s a second thing worth being clear about: much of regenerative medicine is still investigational.[3] These therapies are regulated in Mexico and are not FDA-approved in the United States. That is a statement about regulatory status, not a verdict on safety. Treatment here is delivered under COFEPRIS authorization, in certified clinics and laboratories, by physicians working to defined safety and quality standards.
No clinic, including this one, can guarantee a specific outcome, because every patient, every body and every condition is different. What we can promise is a personalized treatment protocol, an experienced medical team, certified facilitiesmedical team, safe facilities, and dedicated support throughout your entire patient journey. If a clinic claims it can “cure” a condition, or guarantees results, that is worth a closer look before you move forward.
Who we turn away. GIOSTAR Mexico does not offer stem cell therapy for macular degeneration, and does not offer it to patients with active cancer. That exclusion applies to stem cell therapy specifically. For cancer patients, GIOSTAR Mexico offers a separate cellular immunotherapy program, with its own evaluation and eligibility criteria. Beyond those two, every patient is evaluated individually by our medical team. In some cases the nature of the condition, or a patient’s wider medical context, indicates that treatment could pose a health risk, and where that is the case, we determine that stem cell therapy is not an appropriate option. This personalized approach is how we prioritize each patient’s safety and recommend treatment only where our medical team considers it suitable. We’d rather tell you that before you book a flight than after.
That’s also the register we try to hold in the consultation itself. Realistic expectations, not guaranteed outcomes.
What to Expect, From First Enquiry to Aftercare
- Enquiry. You send your condition and history through the form or by phone. A patient coordinator gets in touch.
- Medical screening. Your records go to the Medical Directors, who determine whether you’re a candidate and, if you are, what protocol fits. This is where the honest answer about your case gets made. You receive a personalized, all-inclusive quote.
- Travel. Once treatment dates are confirmed, coordination starts: transfers between airport, hotel and clinic; accommodation, which is included in your package; language assistance throughout. Patients coming to Los Algodones are collected at the border or at Yuma Airport.
- Treatment days. The Medical Director reviews your plan with you on arrival. Labs and imaging are completed, cells are prepared and quality-checked, and applications are given by the routes your protocol specifies. Most protocols run across a small number of days rather than a single appointment.
- Aftercare. Monitoring and follow-up continue after you fly home. Your package includes it. It isn’t an upsell.
