Exploring the Potential of NK Cells: New Research Brings Science and Education Together | GIOSTAR Mexico
A scientific collaboration between GIOSTAR Mexico and UVM Campus Mexicali gave postgraduate students the opportunity to contribute to research examining the existing evidence behind Natural Killer Cell Therapy in solid tumors.
Scientific progress often begins with a question. This year, GIOSTAR Mexico and Universidad del Valle de México (UVM), Campus Mexicali, collaborated on a research project focused on one:
“What does the existing clinical evidence tell us about the use of NK Cells in patients with solid tumors?”
Led by M.C. Diana Esquivel, Chief Scientific Officer at GIOSTAR Mexico, alongside researchers and postgraduate students from UVM Campus Mexicali, the project resulted in the systematic review Efficacy of Adoptive Cell Therapy with Natural Killer Cells in Cases of Solid Tumors.
The study was published in the Journal of Oncology Research and Therapy on August 7, 2026, with affiliations from both the Global Institute of Stem Cell Therapy and Research in Mexico and Universidad del Valle de México, Campus Mexicali.
For the participating students, the project also marked an important milestone: contributing to their first scientific publication.

Why Are Scientists Studying Natural Killer Cells?
Natural Killer Cells, or NK Cells, are part of the body’s innate immune system and help recognize and eliminate abnormal cells, including tumor cells.
Unlike some other immune cells, NK Cells can recognize abnormal cells without relying on antigen presentation through the major histocompatibility complex, or MHC. This characteristic has made them an important area of research in cancer immunotherapy.
Scientists continue to investigate how these naturally occurring immune cells may contribute to new and more personalized approaches to cancer care.
NK Cell Therapy as a Complementary Approach
One distinction is especially important:
NK Cell Therapy is not intended to replace conventional cancer treatments.
Surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy continue to play essential roles in cancer care depending on each patient’s diagnosis and circumstances.
Instead, research is exploring NK Cell immunotherapy as a complementary approach, including its use alongside treatments such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
The goal is to better understand how immune-based therapies may become part of broader and more individualized cancer treatment strategies.

From Postgraduate Studies to a Scientific Publication
Behind every scientific publication are people helping transform questions into evidence.
For the postgraduate students involved in this project, the collaboration between GIOSTAR Mexico and UVM Campus Mexicali created an opportunity to participate in scientific research beyond the classroom and contribute to their first scientific publication.
On September 22, Universidad del Valle de México, Campus Mexicali, recognized the participating students for their contributions to the project.
M.C. Diana Esquivel, Chief Scientific Officer at GIOSTAR Mexico, and Alejandro Gutierrez, Chief Operating Officer at GIOSTAR Mexico, joined the recognition event alongside university leadership to celebrate this academic milestone.
Importantly, the recognition was presented by UVM Campus Mexicali. For GIOSTAR Mexico, participating in the event was an opportunity to accompany the students as their contribution to the research was recognized.
The occasion represents something larger than the publication of one paper.
When academic education connects with active scientific research, postgraduate students can gain firsthand exposure to how scientific questions are explored, evaluated, and ultimately shared with the broader research community.
In this case, that journey led all the way to a peer-reviewed scientific publication.
Research Led by GIOSTAR Mexico
The project was led by M.C. Diana Esquivel, Chief Scientific Officer at GIOSTAR Mexico.
With a B.S. in Biology and a Master’s Degree in Molecular Ecology and Biotechnology from the Autonomous University of Baja California (UABC), her work includes regenerative medicine, biotechnology, quality systems, and advanced laboratory processes.
Through this collaboration, professional scientific experience was connected with postgraduate education, bringing researchers and students together around an evolving area of medicine.

Moving the Scientific Conversation Forward
NK Cells are a natural part of the immune system, and their potential therapeutic applications continue to be studied within cancer immunotherapy.
For GIOSTAR Mexico, this project represents both a scientific contribution and an educational collaboration with UVM Campus Mexicali.
It also reflects the value of creating opportunities where established researchers and future scientists can work together and contribute to ongoing scientific conversations.
At GIOSTAR Mexico, we remain committed to research, collaboration, and the continued study of regenerative medicine and cellular therapies.
